EMAS is a management instrument designed by European Commission to help companies and other private and public organizations to evaluate, report, and improve their environmental performance. Its requirements are contained in Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009. EMAS is designed for organizations whose corporate philosophy is built on active environmental management and a desire to document their environmental activities in a publicly accessible manner. This scheme requires an environmental audit and the publication of an environmental report which is verified annually. The ISO 14001 requirements are also an integral part of EMAS.
